Who is Carrie van de Langenberg?
Hi, I’m Carrie, a passionate ceramicist and creative practitioner with a deep appreciation for the arts, residing in the North East. Originally hailing from beautiful South Africa, I earned a BA in History of Art, Social Anthropology, and Theatre Design from Wits University, Johannesburg, back in 2006. Since then, my journey has taken me through a vibrant world of creativity, exploring ceramics, photography, illustration, printmaking, and graphic design.
Throughout my career, I’ve thrived on collaborating with diverse creative projects across various genres. My experiences include 10 years working in Theatres on the West End and most recently 5 years in the Costume Department for the acclaimed Netflix series “The Crown” as a Costume Continuity Coordinator. All interspersed with regular wood-fire pottery residencies at the rustic Starways Arts Centre nestled in the forest and mountains of Hogsback, South Africa, I trained under the guidance of Master Potters Anton van de Merve, Liyanda Mafika, and John Steele. In 2020 I completed a glaze chemistry course by Linda Bloomfield which sparked my love affair with Glazes. Back in London my practice continued under the guidance of talented ceramicist and friend Melissa Dora. These immersive experiences allowed me to dive deeply into the art of pottery, emphasizing the importance of process, skill, and technique. Working alongside these masters, I learned not just the intricacies of form and function but also the transformative power of clay as a therapeutic outlet. Each session became a mindful practice, steering away from the distractions of the digital world and focusing on the tangible experience of creating.
Seeking a new adventure after many years in London, I transitioned to the North East coast, where I’m excited to cultivate my creative practice by opening my first pottery studio in North Shields. My focus lies in developing a unique glaze collection that embodies the spirit of experimentation and mindfulness. Here, I invite you to join me in the wonderful journey of working with clay—a therapeutic escape that allows us to connect with the tactile world around us and embrace our creativity.
